Sewa Mutually Aided Cooperative Thrift Societies Federation Ltd
23rd Annual Report
Thrift Cooperatives Association was registered in 1984 under the Public Societies Registration Act, 1350 F with the objective of expanding and consolidating thrift cooperative movement in the state by promoting new societies and to offer development services for the existing societies. TCA got re-registered in 2003 as Sewa Mutually Aided Cooperative Thrift Societies Federation under AP Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies Act, 1995. Sewa Federation is offering its services to Womens thrift and credit societies, Mens Thrift and Credit Societies and Neighbourhood Thrift and Credit Societies, Employees Thrift and Credit Societies. During December 2006 the area of operation of Sewa Federation was extended to the entire State of Andhra Pradesh. At present it is working in the districts of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, West Godavari and Kadapa. The activities and the services of Sewa Federation during 2006-07 are reported under various heads.
Promotion:
The main programme of the Sewa Federation is to extend assistance for promotion of thrift and credit societies to those interested people in conducting thrift and credit activity in accordance with principles of cooperation. In pursuance of this new societies are being formed in various places. More and more people are coming into the fold of thrift cooperatives due to vast changes occurring in rural and urban economic conditions, and deficiencies in the service delivery systems of Banks, Self Help Groups and more particularly the micro finance companies. People are understanding clearly the virtues of thrift cooperatives in practical terms and coming forward to set up new thrift societies. During this financial year 735 new societies are promoted.
Sewa Federation is propogating “Pragathi Model thrift coops”. The thrift cooperative will limit itself to a village/neighbourhood/basti and tries to enroll and serve 100-200 families by providing monthly thrift, deposits , loans, loan insurance, pension and other welfare services to them in consistent manner with the support of Sewa Federation. They are expected to be financially viable over a period of two years. Sewa Federation now has 1125 societies as against the plan target of 450.
It was decided to carryout the promotional and development work in other districts under Sewa Federation banner till the state level informal federation promoted jointly with regional associations in other districts formally takes shape as a company
Membership:
Sewa Federation provides services to thrift societies from day one with initial promotional assistance. Generally the thrift societies run informally without registering themselves during first year or they attain bench marks of 100 members and Rs.3 laksh thrift fund. During this stage these societies are considered as associate/nominal members without voting rights but services are provided. Once they are able to satisfy the whole criteria Sewa Federation extends support in registration process and enrolls them as regular fullfledged members. Sewa Federation encourages every thrift society to be registered as a cooperative and open a separate bank account. So far 105 societies were registered under AP MACS Act. 513 societies are in process. It is expected that all societies would be registered during 2007-08. 992 societies were considered as members during 2006-07.
Acknowledgements:
Sewa Federation expresses its gratitude to member-societies for patronising the services, committee members, delegates, Directors, and staff, Financial Institutions for their participation and contributions and all other well wishers and cooperators for their support.
